PRESERVING RENTERS' RIGHTS
Experienced Memphis, Tennessee, Debt Relief Lawyer
Everyone needs shelter and a home. We recognize that falling behind on rent is frightening and intensely stressful. Although filing for bankruptcy will not stop your obligation to pay rent, in many situations it can help you catch up and avoid eviction.
At the Jonathan Garrett Law Firm, we will listen and work to understand the details of your overall financial situation, including concerns about staying in your apartment or other rental property. Do not wait for an eviction notice. Contact us today to talk through your legal options with an attorney. The initial consultation for people considering bankruptcy is free.
Can Filing Bankruptcy Help Me Keep My Apartment?
First of all, if you have managed to stay current with your rent but are dealing with other major financial pressures, your landlord may never need to know about your bankruptcy. If you are behind with rent but you have not yet received an eviction order, filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy will usually stop any eviction proceedings against you. Once we file your case, you will have to remain current on your rent.
What About Back Rent?
We have successfully helped people throughout western Tennessee get a range of judgments — including those obtained by landlords — discharged by filing bankruptcy. Each situation is unique, and the most important thing is to learn your renters' rights and options before you fall too far behind.
